Mr. Maurice Samuel Salamy, 101, of Orlando, Florida passed away Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Advent Health Apopka following a brief illness. Mr. Salamy was born April 4, 1923, in New York, New York to the late Samuel & Suzanne (Haddad) Salamy. He moved to the Orlando area in 1962 and retired as an Electronics Engineer after 22 years with Martin Marietta. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years Sally Salamy who passed away July 26, 2015, at the age of 103. He and his wife Sally have been members of Congregation Ohev Shalom since 1963.
While in public school he won a two-year New York City Art Scholarship. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He obtained his first-class radiotelephone and second-class radiotelephone licenses after 6 months at a federally funded school. He worked at the radio station WKNY in Kingston, New York.
As a radio engineer and later in 1942 for American Export Airlines as an aircraft mechanic where he enlisted in the United State Navy in 1943 serving as a radio technician. He was sent to Navy material school for 4 years. Upon graduation he was shipped to the Pacific area for 13 months. He was attached to the 3rd Fleet earning battle stars.
He was present at the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Harbor in 1945. After his discharge he joined the Army Transportation Corps as a radio officer and made three trips to Europe.
He worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as an Electronic Mechanic for eight years. Attended City College of New York under the G I Bill evenings and graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. Later working at Western Electric, Grumman Aircraft, Mecpar.
Mr. Salamy was a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and Jewish War Veterans of United States, American Legion, IEEE Senior Member, COS Men’s Club, Red Cross, Lifetime Member of ARRL, CCNY Alumni Association, Lockheed Martin Retirement Association, Hamm-Ramm Amateur Radio Club.
Mr. Salamy is survived by his son; Gordon (Karan) Salamy of Orlando, Florida; stepdaughter, Loretta Harvey of Glenrock, New Jersey and 7 grandchildren.
Graveside Service with for Mr. Salamy will be held at 12:00 PM Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Congregation Ohev Shalom Cemetery (6034 Old Winter Garden Road, Orlando, FL) with Rabbi Geoffrey Spector of Congregation Ohev Shalom officiating. Military honors rendered by the United States Navy.
