It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doris Pines, a spirited and cherished mother, grandmother, great aunt, cousin, and friend, who left us peacefully on July 14th, 2024. Her age was timeless.
Born on April 30th, 1928, Doris lived a life filled with joy, laughter, and an unyielding zest for life. She was the inspiring matriarch of her family. She was the heart and soul of every gathering, known for her captivating stories, generous spread of meals, and the uncanny ability to connect with any person she met. Everyone who crossed her path, whether it was the ladies at her insurance agency who personally sent her flowers upon hearing about a recent hospitalization to the pool man who shared deep conversations with her every week, fell in love with her spirit. Every one of her grandchildren’s friends were her friends as well, some even claiming her as their own grandma.
Doris was a devoted mother to Ivy, Arthur, Larry, and Emily, who were the pride and joy of her life. She taught them the values of love, kindness, generosity, and the importance of family togetherness. Her grandchildren will forever remember her as the grandmother who could always be counted on for a warm hug, family stories, or an impromptu dance party at the dining room table. It would give her Nachas to see her love of the Yiddish language imparted to her grandchildren. She loved to tell stories about her early life in New York and the impact her extended family had on her. She didn’t have any siblings, so her cousins filled that role. They maintained strong relationships their entire lives.
She took great pride in her appearance, partaking in weekly trips to the beauty shop to see all of her best friends and socialize. She famously told her family that “if you look good, you feel good”, and she always insisted on getting dressed for the day with makeup and hair done. No matter what was going on or how she felt, she always took time to go into her massive closet and find a stylish outfit perfect for any occasion. Each outfit wouldn’t be complete without a couple of evil eyes, which she saw as a source of protection.
Her passions were many, but they were all rooted in her love for people and life. Whether she was hosting elaborate family dinners, sharing her wisdom with younger generations, or simply enjoying a quiet evening with family, Doris lived every moment to the fullest. You couldn’t go to her house without being offered a three-course meal followed by all the candy and chocolate your heart could handle. Her generosity knew no limits.
Her life was a vibrant tapestry of remarkable experiences, heartfelt connections, and indomitable courage. Her spontaneous nature led her to the most exciting adventures such as day trips to the Greek community in Tarpon Springs, a train ride across the country, or going to the beach at a moment’s notice. When she was a young woman, she went on a trip to California, which she often said shaped her life. Her love of California lasted her whole life, and when she was no longer able to travel there, she started having all of her favorite foods shipped. The scones were her favorite.
Her memory and quick wit never faltered, and you could find her every morning with her Wordle and New York Times crossword puzzle, flying through them with ease.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.
As we say goodbye to Doris, we remember her not with sadness but with the same joy and laughter that she brought into our lives. Her memory will forever be a light in our hearts.
