MSG Harry Bailey Bessner, United States Army, Retired, a decorated veteran and beloved family man, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, dedication, and love. Born on July 10, 1934, in Bronx, New York, Harry grew up with a strong sense of duty and patriotism, which led him to join the Army at a young age.
Harry served his country with distinction for 27 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant in the elite Green Berets. Known for his unwavering honor, integrity, and tenacity, he completed three tours of duty during the Vietnam War. His exceptional service earned him several commendations, including the prestigious Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
While stationed in Okinawa, Harry met the love of his life, Mieko, on a blind date. This chance encounter blossomed into a marriage that lasted over 60 years. Together, they raised three daughters: Caren, Manda, and Brenda. Their firstborn son, Steven, passed away shortly before his first birthday, a loss that deeply impacted their family. Despite this, Harry's dedication to his family was as profound as his dedication to his country. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, known affectionately as "Papa" to his six grandchildren—Bailey, Madison, Aaron, Ryan, Cameryn, and Ainsley—and his great-grandson, Zander. He is also survived by his son-in-laws, Jon, Kevin, and Jason, and grandson-in-law Dustin.
Harry's family remembers him as a playful and adventurous spirit. He delighted in playing "monster" and chasing his children around the house, bringing back souvenirs from his missions, and taking them to theme parks to ride all the roller coasters. A fond memory cherished by his daughters was their back-scratching contests, which he always declared a tie, ensuring they would do it again. Every morning, Harry would wake his children for school by whistling a tune and flicking the lights on and off, reminding them, "If you want to hoot with owls in the evening, you better be able to soar with the eagles in the morning." He taught his grandchildren how to make a proper fist to protect themselves, humorously advising them about the "biters" in their daycare classes.
Harry was an ardent supporter of his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was a familiar face at band concerts, Friday night cheerleading, soccer games, and other events. The grandkids fondly remember getting kicked outside when they were "giggling" too much and acting like fools, but also the numerous trips he took them on, from splash parks and practice sessions to out-of-state family vacations. He instilled in them the values of independence and perseverance, teaching them to never give up.
Harry's passion for history and classical music was a testament to his intellectual curiosity and refined taste. He also enjoyed watching movies, with "12 Angry Men" and "The Quiet Man" being among his favorites.
MSG Harry Bailey Bessner served his country and his family with unparalleled love and honor. His legacy of courage, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
