Janet (Lustig) Leavy Schwartz, 92, passed away on Nov. 1, 2021 at home in Hollywood, Fla.
Janet was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend. Endearingly referred to as "The Blonde Bombshell," she was known for her impeccable fashion sense and love of the color "shocking pink." More importantly, she will be remembered for her kind heart and generous spirit.
Janet was born on July 8, 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from Erasmus High School Class of 1947 and went on to complete her education at Eastman School of Business in Manhattan. Janet came from a prominent family in the food and beverage industry. The Lustigs owned and operated restaurants including Harbour House in Bal Harbour, Fla.; Fontainebleau and Eden Roc in Miami Beach, Fla.; and Longchamps in New York City, N.Y.
Janet had a long career in the legal, banking and accounting fields. She was the personnel director for Broad & Cassel Law Firm and Touche Ross. Janet was also a professional model and world traveler. In the early stages of her career, she turned down a modeling contract and offer to join the Radio City Rockettes because she fell in love with South Florida.
After her career, her exceptional skills transitioned to her volunteer work. Janet was the PTA President at Ojus Elementary School, leaving her legacy through the installation of air conditioning throughout the school. She was also a Cub Scout Leader and Girl Scout Leader. A philanthropist and supporter of the arts, Janet's life was dedicated to giving back to the community. She was a Board Member and the Volunteer Director for the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) and long-time benefactor of the Florida Grand Opera and Cinema Paradiso.
Janet was an original Miami Dolphins season ticket holder since 1966. She was an avid fan who never missed a game.
Janet is survived by her children Laura (David) Schwartz of Miami, Fla., Jon (Lisa) Leavy of Sunrise, Fla., and Laurence Leavy of N.M.B. Fla.; grandchildren Leia Schwartz of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Jennifer Leavy of Davie, Fla.; longtime companion Irwin Levenstein and numerous cousins, extended family and friends.
A crypt side service will be held at Lakeside Memorial Park 10301 NW 25th St, Miami on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m. Immediately following the service, friends and family are invited to Janet's favorite place, Tropical Acres 2500 Griffin Rd, Fort Lauderdale.
