In Loving Memory of Alvina Listengarten 1936 – 2025
Alvina (also known as Alla Alekseevna) Listengarten passed away on March 28, 2025, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonid Listengarten, with whom she shared 57 beautiful years of marriage. Alvina is survived by her daughter, Julia; son-in-law, Alex; and her cherished grandsons, Philip and Frank — all of whom were the greatest joys of her life.
Alvina was an extraordinary wife, a loving mother, and a deeply devoted grandmother. She was also a gifted musician and a passionate teacher, known not only for her immense talent but also for the kindness, warmth, and inspiration she shared with everyone around her.
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1936, Alvina grew up during World War II. The resilience and perseverance she developed during her childhood years stayed with her throughout her life. Whether she was making music, conducting a choir, teaching a student, or simply spending time with her family and friends, Alvina gave herself completely — with heart, with purpose, with intensity, and with love.
Music was at the very heart of Alvina’s life. For most of her career, she served as a Professor of Conducting at Baku’s Music College, where she led the college’s celebrated choir. Her artistic leadership and deep commitment to teaching made a significant impact on the development of choral music in Azerbaijan. She mentored generations of students, many of whom went on to become accomplished musicians and conductors — carrying forward her legacy and spirit.
After moving to the United States, Alvina continued to share her passion with others. She taught young musicians, worked closely with former students, and offered her time, energy, and expertise wherever it was needed. She was especially devoted to her younger grandson, Frank, whose musical talent she encouraged with great pride, joy, and affection.
Alvina’s legacy lives on — not only through the music she helped bring into the world, but in the lives, she shaped, the family she loved so deeply, and the example she set with her compassion, wisdom, and strength. Her memory will forever remain in our hearts, in every musical note, in every act of kindness, and in the love, we continue to carry forward in her name.
Funeral Service for Alvina will be held Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 9:00 AM at the Burton & Barbara Chasnov Pavilion at Congregation Ohev Shalom Cemetery (6034 Old Winter Garden Road, Orlando, FL) with Rabbi David Kay officiating. May she rest in peace and may her memory always be a blessing.
