Rose Lefkowitz Savage passed away May 14 in Winter Park. A native of Winston-Salem, NC, she was born May 24, 1921 to the late Abe and Mollie Lefkowitz and was married to Dr. Alvin H. Savage for 68 years until his passing in 2010.
Rose was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. The embodiment of her name, she saw the world through rose-colored glasses, finding joy and happiness in everything. She was active in Temple Israel, serving as Sisterhood president, as well as the local Dental Auxiliary, helping to create a puppet show about good dental hygiene that toured local schools. Rose regularly volunteered in the PTA for all three of her daughters, Lauren, Karen, and Heidi.
A true Southern belle, Rose was always gracious and welcoming. She loved to open her home to young families, and to this day, people talk about how she was the first person to reach out to them when they were new in town. Along with her hospitality, Rose was also a creature of habit. She liked grilled cheese with tomato at Ronnie's, a shrimp cocktail at Morrison’s, a hamburger or hotdog with LOTS of mustard, fresh mangos, and breakfast any time of day as long as it included a biscuit.
Rose always gave Baby Ruth's for Halloween because that's what she liked. She was an amazing cook and prided herself on teaching her children to host a great party. She was often heard saying “You don't need a lot of money to look good, just good taste.” She had dozens of “Rose-isms,” such as dipsy-doodle: to meander and take shortcuts that don't necessarily get you there any faster.
The later years of her marriage were full of travel with the love of her life, Alvin, and many amazing friends. Rose embodied love and could often be heard saying “I love you,” “You’re pretty,” and “Kiss me.”
Rose is survived by her daughters Lauren Savage-Gordon (Alan Gordon) of Houston, TX, Karen Savage of Winter Park, and Heidi Savage of Orlando. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Mollie R. Gordon-Karni (Dr. Ron Karni), Adam (Jennifer) Gordon, Mollie E. Savage, Hal Shimkoski, and Dana Shimkoski and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Ernest and Joe and her sister Shirley.
